20% Off Squishy Mats - Great for Babies & Pets!

My pup, Riley, is such a little diva of a man-pup. Whenever we take him places where we plan to stick around for awhile, like a coffee shop or our favorite brewery, he spends the whole time fidgeting. He refuses to lay his delicate elbows and belly on the cold, hard ground. He is much too used to having his soft, cushiony pup-bed. He's got 4 throughout our house (not that he's spoiled or anything...). But they're too darn big to travel with.

So when I found out about Squishy Mats, I was psyched! Squishy Mats contain almost one inch of Memory Foam - also known as the low resistance polyurethane foam developed by NASA in the 1960s. The surface of each mat is covered by a super soft, micro-flannel fabric and is backed with a nonslip rubber grid. Each mat is durable, sturdy and designed for life on the move.

The perfect solution for our diva pup! My husband and I can enjoy our delicious, frosty beers while Riley can sleep comfortably on his Squishy Mat. The Squishy Mat would also be perfect for infants or toddlers - a great way to keep them comfortable and off the dirty ground.

Squishy Mats come in three sizes:
16" x 32" The Skinny Mini - perfect for little dogs with big personalities and a nice way to protect "their" spot on the couch from hair - folds and fastens with a carrying handle.

3' x 3' Little Squishy - The Little Squishy fits perfectly in the back of most vehicles, keeping your automobile clean and your fur babies comfortable - folds and fastens with a carrying handle.

4' x 4' Big Squishy - Let's face it, the dog is just gonna steal the Squishy Mat from you and your little one. The Big Squishy is truly made with everyone in mind, but buy Fluffy his own mat and be sure to pick one up for yourself - folds and fastens with a carrying handle.

I'm so grateful that I was sent a complimentary Squishy Mat to check out. I'm hooked!

Pros of the Squishy Mat

  • Folds up to make it portable
  • Strong handle for carrying it
  • Memory Foam!!!
  • Nice, neutral grey color
  • Grippy bottom to prevent slipping

Want your own Squishy Mat? My readers save 20% Off with code SQUISHYPETS on all sized Squishy Mats - Because Squishy Mats are for EVERYONE!

Adopt, Don't Shop! Caturday Special: Clear the Shelters Day 8/19

Owning a pet is an expensive endeavor. They're like children - you need to feed them, toilet them, take them to the doctor's, buy them toys.... it all adds up. So why on earth would someone want to dole out more money by buying a pet when you can get great pets through adoption!?

And it just so happens that today is National Clear the Shelters Day! NBC and Telemundo owned stations are teaming up with hundreds of shelters across the country to host Clear the Shelters, a nationwide pet adoption drive on Saturday, August 19 to help find loving homes for animals in need. Over 50,000 pets found their forever homes in 2016.

Based on the available data, American Humane estimates the following startling statistics about animal euthanasia:

  • In 1997, roughly 64 percent of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized — approximately 2.7 million animals in just 1,000 shelters that responded to a voluntary survey. These animals may have been euthanized due to overcrowding, but may also have been sick, aggressive, injured or suffering from something else.
  • 56 percent of dogs and 71 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification.
  • Approximately 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation’s shelters in 2008.

If you are even the slightest bit considering adding a fur-baby to your family, remember:

Adopt, Don't Shop!

Some shelters are even waiving adoption fees in honor of Clear the Shelters Day!

If you happen to pick up a cute and fuzzy squish, like my nugget above, Zoe, and don't want to spend a half hour in the food aisle of the pet supply store trying to figure out which type is the best, check out Reviews.com.

The fabulous team at Reviews.com researched 1,759 cat food formulas, spent months analyzing the cat food industry, and surveyed 97 veterinary professionals, as well as hundreds of devoted cat owners. Despite felines’ complicated dietary needs, they ultimately put together a guide that identified 9 formulas that contained high-quality, risk-free ingredients.

Looking more for dog food? They put in just as much time and effort analyzing that too! Ten people on their team dedicated full-time work to this project, investing over 1,400 hours!!

Feel free to send me a snapshot of your beloved furry!

Low Cost Rabies Clinics in MA

Have some furry friends? Are they already costing you an arm and leg? Don't let a rabies shot cause you to lose another appendage!

Many municipalities throughout Massachusetts offer low-cost rabies clinics, especially during the spring months. Massachusetts requires that all cats and dogs be up to date on their rabies' vaccinations. This is so critical, especially if your beloved fur-ball ever leaves the house!

The following may not apply to all clinics, but has been my experience in the past:

  • Cash is the only accepted form of payment.
  • To be eligible for a three year vaccine, owners must bring proof of prior vaccination.
  • You do not need to be a resident of the Town in which the clinic is being held in order to attend.

Please check out this frequently updated list of clinics available throughout Massachusetts.

I also volunteer for the Seekonk Animal Shelter and will be helping out at their annual Rabies Clinic on March 11th.

If you'd rather check out the clinics available in Rhode Island, take a peek at my other post.

Low Cost Rabies Clinics in RI

Have some furry friends? Are they already costing you an arm and leg? Don't let a rabies shot cause you to lose another appendage!

The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association is putting on their annual Rabies Clinics throughout Rhode Island. This is an incredibly low-cost way to get your furries' their rabies vaccines. The most expensive clinic is only $15 and most are around $10!

Please keep in mind that it is required by law that all cats, dogs and ferrets have an up-to-date rabies vaccine. If you're interested in learning more about Massachusetts rabies clinics, check out my post here.

Some important things to know about Rhode Island rabies clinics:

  • Cash is the only accepted form of payment.
  • To be eligible for a three year vaccine, owners must bring proof of prior vaccination and as far as I know, that previous vaccination cannot be expired (this is different from MA)
  • You do not need to be a resident of the Town in which the clinic is being held in order to attend.

High Quality Pet Spay/Neuter for Less!

Owning a pet is an expensive endeavor. They're like children - you need to feed them, toilet them, take them to the doctor's, buy them toys.... it all adds up. So why on earth would someone want to dole out more money by buying a pet when you can get great pets through adoption!?

Zoe Chrysanthemum - always willing to help with laundry!

Charlotte Rue - equally as hard working when it comes to laundry!

If you adopt a cat or dog from a Massachusetts shelter, it is a requirement that the animal be spayed or neutered. If the animal is old enough, it will be spayed before adoption and the adoption fee may be a bit higher. If the animal is too young, you, as the adopter, are required to sign paperwork stating you will have the animal spayed by a certain deadline. If you do not follow through and provide documentation, the shelter can pursue legal action.

In the state of Rhode Island, it is a law that any cat over the age of 6 months must be spayed or neutered. The only exception is if you have a license for breeding or if you have a letter from the veterinarian stating the cat cannot be spayed due to age or other medical reasons.

Buy spaying and neutering can be EXPENSIVE!

If you need to spay or neuter your cat or dog, check out some of these low-cost clinics in Massachusetts. This list has been put together by the Massachusetts Animal Coalition.  And here is a list of low-cost clinics in Rhode Island which has been compiled by Dog Lover's Digest. Often times you can opt to have your pet receive vaccinations, such as rabies and distemper in cats or rabies and parvo in dogs, during the spay appointment for an additional, yet subsidized cost.

Saturday Successes: It's a Girl!

It's a girl!

No, I'm not pregnant. Nor was I ever pregnant. My husband and I are (human) childless by choice. Today's Saturday Success is about my family welcoming a different kind of child - our newest daughter, Charlotte Rue.

As a volunteer at the Seekonk Animal Shelter, one possible duty is fostering animals that don't thrive in the shelter's environment. Three weeks ago, the ACO, Sharon, asked that I bring home a tiny little grey kitten who wouldn't eat much in her cage at the shelter. She was unnamed, super teeny and extremely timid and skittish.

Let me tell you, my husband's rage when I walked through the door with a cat carrier in hand was unparalleled. But it didn't take long before Charlotte melted his angry heart.

It took a week of hand feeding her before she finally ate by herself. It also took a week before she'd come out from her towel-fort without me dragging her out.

But now she's a purring monster revving up the second I walk into the room.

We're so glad to be able to call her ours!

Adopt, Don't Shop! Caturday Special: Special Needs Hurley

I started volunteering at the Seekonk Animal Shelter back in December. I've always wanted to save the kitties - one kitty at a time. But since my husband put the kay-bash on my kitty-saving efforts after two kitties, I must devise a different plan for saving them!

This is a new series I plan on continuing as long as there are cats available for adoption at the Seekonk Shelter. Although called Caturday, it will also include dogs available for adoption too.

Owning a pet is an expensive endeavor. They're like children - you need to feed them, toilet them, take them to the doctor's, buy them toys.... it all adds up. So why on earth would someone want to dole out more money by buying a pet when you can get great pets through adoption!?

I can't stress to you the importance of keeping your pets' vaccinations up to date. We're so diligent about bringing our children to the doctor's for routine visits, so why do we become so lax when it comes to our pets? There are so many illnesses and diseases that are highly contagious yet highly preventable with the appropriate vaccines and precautions.

And this week's Caturday is dedicated to this friendly fellow, Hurley, who is positive for feline leukemia (FeLV) but can still make an amazing companion!

Handsome Hurley is a 2-year-old tiger and white male kitty who is super affectionate and loves to play! Unfortunately he tested positive for feline leukemia which means he must be kept in a home with no other kitty friends or with other FeLV positive kitties. We are truly hoping someone will open their heart and home to this beautiful guy. Hurley has no adoption fee. Please spread the word and help us find a fur-ever home for him!

A little about FeLV:

Humans cannot contract FeLV, nor can dogs. However, other cats can contract it through "moist contact," such as infected saliva (grooming, licking, biting, sharing dishes, litter boxes, etc.). FeLV cannot be cured, however, kitties who are FeLV positive can live happy lives.

If you're interested in adopting any animal from the Seekonk Animal Shelter, here is the application for adoption.

Adopt, Don't Shop! Caturday Special: Kittens Galore!

I'd like to think that it's plain common sense not to leave your pet in the car while you run into the grocery store or the post office or the bar or anywhere else for that matter... you wouldn't leave your infant in the car, would you? Despite what I think is common sense, I frequently see pets, especially dogs, left in unattended cars even during these exceptionally hot days.

The temperature in a car rises much quicker than the temperature outside. It takes mere minutes for the temperature to become fatal for an animal. In the state  of Massachusetts, causing an animal to be subjected to any sort of unnecessary cruelty or suffering can be punishable by up to one year of imprisonment or a fine of $1000. If you're planning to run errands, leave your pet at home!

And this week's Caturday is dedicated to our many kittens!

In the last several weeks, the Seekonk Animal Shelter has taken in at least two separate litters of kittens. These little ones are just now turning about 8 weeks old and are ready to be adopted! We have a mixture of males and females. The gingers above (orange) are all males. The very patriotic looking sweetpea on the bottom is a female as is the other tiger/striped kitty.

Each will come dewormed, with initial booster vaccines and microchipped. If they are not spayed or neutered prior to leaving the shelter, you will be required to have this done by a given deadline as part of your adoption contract. How can you resist these tiny, fuzzy faces?!

If you're interested in adopting any animal from the Seekonk Animal Shelter, here is the application for adoption.

Heartgard Plus HeartWorm Preventatives 75% Off!

I wish I had this promotional code 3 days ago when I ordered a 6 month supply for our new pup, Riley Blue.

But my loss is your gain! Here's a promo code for 75% off any Heartgard Heartworm Preventative at PetCareRx. Use the promo code 75FLEA at checkout. This does require a prescription from your vet. So at some point you'll receive a questionnaire about your pet's current vet. PetCareRx will contact your vet to verify that your animal can be prescribed the Heartgard and then you'll get an email telling you once it's been approved. It's that easy! Shipping should be free - or at least it showed up free for me when I pretended to place an order.

DIY Friday - My Father's Day (or Dad's Birthday) Project

I know Father's Day has already passed, but I wanted to show you how easy (and inexpensive) it can be to come up with a cute Father's Day gift. We call my husband "Daddy" at home. Now neither of us have human children, but we do have three furry babies and a late furry baby that we consider our pride and joy.

So every Father's Day, the kids get their Daddy something, but this year we wanted to be a bit crafty and take on a photo project.

Here's our project's inspiration from Brassy Apple

So I ran out to Michael's and bought 3 wooden distressed-style letters spelling out DAD. They were $1.50 each and I had a coupon for 30% off my entire order so I paid a tad bit over $3 for the three letters. We actually used them as decorations for my own father's birthday party later!

I then set out to take my kids' glamour shots. Believe it or not, Riley, our pup, was the easiest to photograph so long as I could keep the wooden block out of his pup mouth!

Our indoor kitty, Zoe, was upset that I disrupted her nap to take her photo.

And our indoor/outdoor adventurer, Selina Kyle, just wanted me to pet her and drool on me. She was the toughest to photograph.

So after a bit of time photographing and laughing my butt off at some of the ridiculous pictures I captured, I finally got some pictures decent enough to turn into a Father's Day gift for their Daddy. I had a coupon for $20 off any $20+ purchase at Shutterfly, so I turned their photos into a card and a really cute mug. *Always check out the Special Offers page at Shutterfly to see what deals they've got going on!

Total cost:
$3.XX for wooden blocks (which I plan to reuse as decorations every Father's Day)
$9.XX for shipping for the mug and card since my coupon didn't include shipping fee)

My Kitties' #ONESwitch - Purina One Kitty Food Review

A few weeks ago, +Influenster  and @PurinaONEcats sent my two kitties a bag full of Purina ONE Smartblend kitty food in Chicken & Turkey flavor. My two love nuggets are used to eating whatever is on sale - I try to keep it the same food each month, but occasionally mix it up. Recently, however, they started picking out certain kibbles from their food bowls and leaving the rest.

But this all changed with the switch to Purina ONE Smartblend. Within minutes of me taking this photo, Selina Kyle gobbled up every last bit of vittles in her bowl. Zoe equally loved the change to her food and never leaves vittles behind anymore.

One of the biggest changes is neither cat wanders through the house crying anymore - I'm wondering if they were crying in hunger since they weren't really into their previous food. Purina ONE Smartblend has antioxidants, lots of protein and omega-6. There are ZERO fillers in this cat food - not something you commonly see unless you're spending ridiculous amounts of money at fancy pet stores. The best part? It comes in 9 different formulas so no matter what age your cat is, there's bound to be a Purina ONE formula for him or her.
